Board Game Review - The Genius Square
The game I am reviewing today is called the Genius Square. This game is very simple to grasp and can be played by almost ages with an age rating of only 6+. It is a game which appeals to all ages, it grasps the attention in a way which is not off putting to an older audience. The concept is simple, you roll seven unique die to determine where the circular wooden pegs go on a 6 by 6 board. Once these pegs are in place, you must figure out where the nine colourful shapes go to fill the rest of the board.
This game, though simple in design, is a wonderfully re-playable game with 62,208 possible distributions of the seven pegs. It is great on its own to challenge your spatial processing skills, but, it also great as a two-player game as well. The game comes with two sets of pieces, and two boards. You can play alone or race against others to complete the puzzle. One of my favourite things about this game is that the two players may well come up with different solutions to the same puzzle.
This puzzle game is very well designed, with clear thought being given to both the play design and the inclusivity of the game. The pieces are large enough to be easily gripped and manoeuvred and the bright contrasting colours make it easier for people to tell the pieces apart. The dice used to place the circular wooden pegs are themselves brilliantly thought out. They are made with the square codes laid out so that there are no impossible combinations of results. With the rules being so simple and the execution of the design being so simple and well done it is hard to find fault with this game.
