The Great Sundering

Before there was the Lonely World, there were the five Essences, and before them there was the Lonely One. After an eternity alone, the lonely one decided that they would split themselves to become multiple beings, and therefore, no longer be alone. From this divergence five distinct Elements came into being. Earth, Water, Light, Void, and Spirit. Of the five, there remained one Element just as lonely as the Lonely One had been if not more so. Spirit, without counterpart, stood apart from the others. The other four were physical and Spirit was not. Seeing the others interact in ways which they could not, Spirit became more acutely aware of itself being alone than the Lonely one was when they were whole. Though the only Element to live in peace, they deeply craved to be one with the physical Elements. The four physical Elements began to war with their counterparts, struggling in vain to gain supremacy over the other. Light fighting Void; Earth against Water. Spirit alone remembered the feeling of peace and serenity that came from being a unified whole.

Over time, Spirit was able to negotiate peace between Light and Void. They agreed to share the time equally between them, however, this came at great cost. In their final battle, Light and Void caused the Great Sundering, rending Earth into pieces. Earth's body was torn asunder with three large pieces and smaller disparate parts spread apart. Light and Void mourned the loss of Earth unable to heal the wounds they caused and also unable to prevent the pieces from drifting further apart. Water, so distraught by the sundering of Earth found only one solution. They split themselves too. First, filling the cracks to prevent further separation, soothing Earth's pain. Second, part was wrapped around the edges of each piece forming the coasts and binding the islands in place. Water, now diminished, used the remainder of its body to bridge the vast distances between the pieces once again forming a physical whole which could not be distanced further. This feat was only accomplished through the alliance between polar opposites.

After observing the sacrifice of Water, Light and Void also chose to split themselves, this time in half, to become part of the unified whole once more. Again, Spirit found themselves alone. They remained separate for a while, observing the new peace. It soon became clear to Spirit, that this new silence was not a comfortable one for most. Now split into numerous parts and spread apart, the Elements turned Deities craved more activity. Spirit called the Council of Life to consult them, and with their guidance and wishes in tow brought life to the world. Spirit worked with the Deities to bring harmony to the Lonely World. For the final time an Element was split, this time giving this new life the gifts of culture, knowledge, and the ability to shape the world around them. Only then did Spirit become one with the physical Elements.
